Overview

The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Princeton University invites applications for a research technician to work in the Stoddard Lab. The technician will spend several months of the year assisting with ongoing fieldwork on hummingbird color vision. Currently fieldwork takes place at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Gothic, Colorado. For the remainder of the year, the technician will be based at Princeton University. The ideal candidate will have experience conducting fieldwork in remote conditions, with a strong interest in ornithology, animal color vision, behavioral experiments, using technical optical equipment (LEDs, RFID equipment, cameras), and computer programming. The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational and data management skills, and should be eager to work as part of a collaborative team. While based at Princeton, the technician will be a core member of the Stoddard Lab and will be responsible for organizing and analyzing field data, operating optical equipment (including cameras and spectrophotometers), training undergraduates and supporting various projects in the lab. The target start date is April or May 2022.

The Stoddard Lab uses an interdisciplinary approach to study animal coloration and morphology, with a focus on birds and bird eggs. For recent examples of research conducted by the Stoddard Lab, visit www.marycstoddard.com

Responsibilities

  • Planning fieldwork and conducting field experiments.
  • Organizing and analyzing data, including writing computer code.
  • Operating optical equipment (including cameras and spectrophotometers).
  • General support and maintenance of research activities in the lab, including purchasing equipment and materials, training undergraduate and graduate students and participating in collaborative projects.

Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field
• Prior field research experience
• A strong quantitative background, with programming skills (R, MATLAB, Python) highly preferred
• Excellent organizational and data management skills
• Excellent written and communication skills
• A strong interest in conducting fieldwork as part of a collaborative, high-energy team
• A valid driver’s license (some driving is required during fieldwork)

 

PREFERRED Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Experience, and Other Education

• Previous research on birds, color vision, animal behavior, field-based experiments
• Experience with LEDs, optical equipment, spectrophotometers, cameras, animal tracking software
