Research Software Engineer

Are you looking to apply your scientific programming expertise to a novel set of research problems? Then we are looking for someone like you to join our team of scientists, analysts, and developers in the Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics.

The Research Computing group at the Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics provides computational research expertise and bioinformatics support to multiple labs across a diverse set of disciplines. As an institute-wide team of software experts, we are focused on improving the quality, performance, and sustainability of the Institute’s computational research software. The group is committed to creating collaborative environments in which the best software engineering practices are valued, and to sharing and applying cross-disciplinary computational techniques in new and emerging areas.

In this position, you will be an integral member of a neuroscience research team focused on the cutting-edge of transcriptomic and epigenomic research applied to understanding how experience shapes brain development and circuits. Your role will be to provide computational expertise in algorithm development, selection, and optimization to create efficient and scalable research code. In addition, you will support other projects in research labs within the Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics.

If you have a strong background in scientific programming, academic research, and an interest in neuroscience and genomics, you have the right skill set to make an immediate impact on multiple high-profile research projects.

This is a one-year term position with the possibility of renewal based on job performance and continued funding.

• Debug and optimize existing code.
• Develop workflows and pipelines.
• Provide guidance and expertise to lab members.
• Understand and address software engineering questions that arise in research planning.
• Maintain knowledge of current and future software development tools and techniques, programming languages, and bioinformatics tools.

Essential Qualifications:

• Strong programming skills, particularly in Python and R.
• Demonstrated successes working in a collaborative software development environment as well as working independently.
• Ability to learn new tools and technologies.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of researchers with varied levels of technical proficiency.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Genomic analysis and computation.
• Computational neuroscience experience.
• Academic research experience.
• Background in neuroscience, biology, or related field.

Education:

• Bachelor's degree in a related field required. A graduate degree in a related field is preferred.

The finalist will be required to successfully pass a background check.
