Research Specialist I/II

The Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics seeks applicants for a Research Technician (Research Specialist I or II) to provide technical support to the Genomics Core Facility by preparing samples and running the high-throughput sequencers.

In addition, the Research Technician will serve as back up to our Loading Dock Attendant when the Attendant is out of the office and provide assistance as needed in the preparation of a variety of microbiological media required for research.

The rank and salary will be commensurate with experience. Salary will include the full benefits package. The position is open and review of applications will begin immediately. The position will start as soon as possible. This will be a one-year full-time term position, with the possibility of renewal given satisfactory job performance and continued funding.

Specific duties include:

• Operation of Next-Generation sequencers and other instruments for genomic research
• Quality control of DNA and RNA samples
• Sample receiving, tracking, and management
• Preparation of sequencing libraries using molecular biology techniques
• Other lab tasks as assigned
• Serve as back up for Loading Dock Attendant as needed:
  • Perform light delivery duty; organize and distribute incoming packages to laboratories as needed.
  • Maintain inventory of consumable materials (compressed gas, liquid nitrogen, dry ice), place orders with suppliers, and deliver materials to labs as requested.
  • We currently anticipate that the Research Technician will serve as backup to the Loading Dock Attendant between 20-25 days of the year.
• Assist with lab media preparation as needed:
  • Prepare sterilized solid and liquid media and solutions as well as growth media for microbes, cells, and organisms and related supplied as needed by the research labs.

Essential qualifications:

• Experience in molecular biology
• Strong attention to detail
• Ability to maintain a meticulous laboratory notebook
• Ability to work well with others
• Excellent customer service skills

Required education:

• Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree or equivalent in biological sciences or related field

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience with Illumina NovaSeq and/or MiSeq Sequencers
• Experience with teaching or training others in a laboratory setting
• Experience with lab / loading dock operations and logistics
• Familiarity with media preparation

The finalist will be required to successfully pass a background check.
