Overview

The Department of Physics at Princeton University is seeking an experienced technician to support the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Outer Tracker (OT) upgrade project.

The OT is a multilayer silicon tracking detector designed to measure the trajectories of charged particles produced in high-energy collisions at the Large Hadron Collider facility at CERN. The upgraded detector will include more than 13,000 silicon modules and will fully replace the current strip tracker in preparation for high-luminosity operations scheduled to begin near the end of this decade. The Princeton CMS group is responsible for wire bonding, encapsulation, and testing of more than 1000 of these modules.

 

Position Summary:

This role involves the assembly and packaging of advanced research devices for the Department of Physics and Princeton’s Materials Institute. The successful candidate will apply their expertise in precision assembly, bonding, encapsulation and inspection techniques, particularly in cleanroom environments, under the direction of Professor James Olsen and the Princeton CMS Group.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties:

  • Program, troubleshoot, and operate production automation systems; Perform manual repairs using state-of-the-art 25-micron fine wire wedge bonders and precision dispensing systems.
  • Verify inspections to ensure build compliance with CMS OT design requirements.
  • Maintain a comprehensive database to track records of data changes, user actions, and system events.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Proficient in reading and writing in English.
  • Possesses fundamental mathematical skills.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Five years related work experience.

Key Competencies:

  • Strong technical comprehension and ability to recognize deviations within the area of expertise.
  • Familiarity with process specifications related to die placement and wire bonding.
  • Excellent manual dexterity and fine motor skills.
  • Ability to interpret detailed assembly instructions, technical drawings, and work documentation.
  • Capable of working in a cleanroom environment following strict protocols.
