  • Overview

    The Research Support Administrator will support the operational needs of faculty research labs, department teaching programs and student research in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. The person will support lab and research compliance, handle facility requests, help with event planning, and provide guidance on hazardous materials. 

    Responsibilities

    Research compliance involving chemical, biological, radioactive materials and other lab issues:    

    •  Act as lab safety officer and research compliance liaison between lab members and university research offices;
    •  Advise students and lab members in appropriate policies, procedures and protocols for research on-campus and off-campus;
    •  Monitor undergraduate research compliance;
    •  Communicate emergency policies and procedures to all.

    Facility: buildings, laboratories, off-campus research site: 

    • Place maintenance request orders in response to lab and office needs, equipment failures and use of hazardous materials;
    • Address requests for common lab space;
    • Establish maintenance contracts and ensure proper operations of lab equipment, freezers; address storage needs; 
    • Maintain and secure capital asset inventory.
    • Monitor appropriate use and maintenance of off-campus research site.
    • Address minor repair projects and other building needs: keys, building access, telephone; 
    • Support major renovation projects: liaison between faculty and design reps; ensure specifications have been met and services are in place;
    • Support special handling deliveries; plan and coordinate receiving and installation of large equipment; oversee and support mailroom operations.

    Field Vehicles

    • Ensure department field vehicles are in working order, registered, inspected;
    • Communicate, and comply with, fleet policies/procedures; advise drivers.

    Event Planning:  support department events, seminars, and symposiums in setup and services needs

     

    This position supports faculty, researchers, graduate students, undergraduate students, staff and visitors and interfaces with Special Facilities Maintenance Group, Building Services, Environmental Health & Safety, Research Integrity and Assurance, Design and Construction, Public Safety, Transportation and Parking Office, and Risk Management; and other department’s facilities representatives.

    Qualifications

    Essential Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience preferred
    • 2-4 years experience in administrative support role, preferably in research lab environment; experience in facilitating maintenance to equipment and building infrastructure issues;
    • understanding of and familiarity with physical needs of research and teaching labs, safety and research compliance, and building infrastructure issues;
    • ability to carry/move heavy objects, packages, etc. (over 50 lbs);
    • effective communications skills – written and verbal;
    • ability to remain calm and diplomatic in demanding situations; effective in juggling multiple project deadlines.
    • skillful in project management

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • experience in research lab with knowledge of research compliance policies and procedures
    • knowledge of lab and occupational safety policies helpful;
    • ability to evaluate costs, prioritize maintenance work with lab needs;
    • knowledge of university policies pertaining to above
