  • Overview

    A full-time Animal Research Specialist II position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Yibin Kang in the Department of Molecular Biology. We use molecular biology approaches and mouse models of cancer to study cancer metastasis. This position may require flexible hours such as early mornings, evenings and weekends as needed by the research projects. In addition, the ideal candidate will also demonstrate a working knowledge of computer technology and associated software used in research. The candidate will support regulatory compliance efforts in accordance with approved IACUC protocols, policies, and procedures. The candidate will be a key point of contact during semi-annual inspections and other regulatory inspections and act as a liaison for the lab staff and PI.

    Responsibilities

    • Manage the lab stock of research animal strains, including breeding, genotypes and weaning.
    • Train junior lab members in relevant animal research methods and surgical techniques.
    • Assist animal surgical experiments and follow-up monitoring and record-keeping.
    • Monitor and supervise animal research in the lab to ensure regulatory compliance and animal welfare, and communicate with the PI and the Laboratory Animal Research office and staff for animal research related issues.
    • The successful candidate is also expected to carry out certain lab duties, such as maintaining animal research equipment and supplies.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor or Master Degree in biological sciences or related disciplines and a minimum of 2-4 years’ experience in laboratory animal research environment, ideally in rodent models of cancer.
    • The candidate will have knowledge of Federal Regulations governing animal care and research.
    • The candidate will have technical expertise in handling, anesthesia and surgical support with laboratory rodents.
    • Candidate should understand operational principles behind techniques and procedures used and demonstrate the ability to train others to these techniques.
    • Accurate and timely data/sample collection, record keeping, data processing and critical thinking skills are a must.
    • Demonstrated ability to carry out high quality research experiments; excellent oral and written communication skills required. Must be responsible and reliable to work independently when necessary possess strong interpersonal skills.
    • Highly motivated candidate with previous experience with mouse research and animal surgical techniques and familiarity with animal research rules and regulations is strongly preferred.
    • 1-2 years of experience in a supervisory/managerial capacity preferred.
    • AALAS certification at the LAT or LATG level preferred.
