The Princeton Neuroscience Institute at Princeton University seeks a Research Software Engineer to develop web-based applications to curate, visualize and analyze terabyte-scale brain data. The completed software applications will be deployed in the cloud and will make use of continuous integration testing and continuous delivery (CI/CD) practices. Proficiency in Python, JavaScript, and MySQL (or similar query language) is essential. Experience with TypeScript, Flask and/or Django frameworks, and cloud computing platforms such as AWS/Google Cloud is highly desirable. The work will contribute to cutting edge neuroscience research in two multi-lab collaborations. The first, BRAIN Circuits Of coGnitive Systems (braincogs.org) is a lively community spanning half a dozen leading laboratories at Princeton University and the University of California, Davis that collaborate to study how brain circuits generate working memory and decision making. The second, BrainSharer, is a recently funded neuroinformatics project based at Princeton and University of California, San Diego that will develop a web platform for visualization and analysis of terabyte-scale brain datasets for use across multiple collaborating laboratories. The software engineer will develop well tested code and lead the development project. They will work in close collaboration with other software developers and meet regularly with local and remote scientists. They will tailor the software to meet the scientific needs of the collaborations.Goal: Develop, document, and then maintain software frameworks for brain data curation, visualization and analysis. Term of employment: one year, renewable. The position is on-site at Princeton. U.S. work visa available.

If so, consider applying to join the Center for Digital Humanities (CDH) at Princeton as our new Senior Research Software Engineer (RSE). As Senior RSE, you will be an integral member of CDH’s work to design and implement high-quality, sustainable software to further innovative research in the humanities and the data-driven or computational sciences. You will work closely with CDH Lead Developer and other research software team members, and will collaborate with faculty, student, and campus partners to help translate research priorities into software needs, including analyzing data, implementing models or simulations, and developing software modules or tools. You will consult with Princeton scholars individually or in small groups to discuss their research and recommend appropriate approaches and solutions.  You’ll have the opportunity for technical leadership on collaborations that align with your expertise, and contribute to research articles, presentations, and course modules. If you have a strong background in programming, academic research, and an interest in the humanities you have the right skill set to make an immediate impact, and will be poised to expand your expertise into new domains. We are looking for someone with demonstrated expertise in at least one technical approach or methodology relevant to humanities research, but we are flexible on the specifics. The interests and experience you bring to CDH will benefit existing projects, and will help recruit new partners for future collaborations. This position reports to the CDH Lead Developer and qualifies for 20% R&D time. The Department of Sociology at Princeton University seeks applicants for a full-time post-baccalaureate research assistant position with Professor Matthew Desmond and Professor John N. Robinson III. Successful candidates will have a background in quantitative social science, data science, economics, statistics, urban studies, and/or related fields. The research assistant will assist with a project mapping and measuring the spatial distribution of affordable rental housing developments, estimating the economic impacts of such developments, and the extent to which they contribute to gentrification, segregation, wealth disparities and other inequality-related processes. The research assistant will also work on one or more of the Eviction Lab’s new initiatives aimed at combatting housing instability, including a Joint Statistical Project with the U.S. Census, involving the merging of over 80 million eviction records with several administrative databases and an analysis of the restricted-use file of the American Housing Survey (2017), which will entail the first estimation of informal evictions in national perspective. We seek self-driven, creative thinkers with strong quantitative skills to assist with research analysis and publication of research findings on housing instability, urban inequality, and public policy. Successful candidates must have previous experience managing and analyzing quantitative data using sophisticated statistical or computer programming techniques. Proficiency in R or Stata is required, previous experience with Python, ArcGIS, web scraping, accessing data through APIs, advanced data visualization, managing large datasets, or working with administrative data is a plus. Previous coursework in sociology, urban studies, or housing instability is not required but useful; an intellectual interest in applying rigorous data analysis to social problems is essential.

The Empirical Study of Conflict (ESOC) Project seeks a Research Specialist to provide geo-spatial and statistical analysis as well as qualitative research for a multi-university team of researchers.
